PRINCIPALS REPORT
Hello Swan Reach,
Hoping the season of ‘bugs and flus’ isn’t impacting too harshly on you, your family and your mental health. It can be more difficult to remain resilient and mentally healthy when one’s physical health is challenged. In such times, it is beneficial to have a good team around for support, along with positive thinking and self-efficacy, that are also of enormous assistance. SRAS staff and students have experienced the impact of wider-spread illness recently and it is a credit to them that they have coped as well as they have. With many bugs, and some quite nasty ones about, it is a timely reminder to ensure ill students (and adults) remain off-site until symptoms have eased. Unfortunately, classrooms are very good bug incubators, so keeping ill children at home will help to keep our community healthier.
FAREWELL
We wish Naomi, Thomas and Renee, our very best for their futures as they leave SRAS secondary. We will miss their friendship and contributions to classroom and yard interactions.
WELCOME
We warmly welcome Jaymee-Lee to our secondary sector and her siblings, Toree-Lee, Brenix and Natalia-Lee, to our primary classrooms. We also welcome their family, who have previous connection with SRAS.
MID MURRAY OUR TOWN (MMOT) YOUTH CONNECTOR
SRAS continues to benefit from its long-term partnership with MMOT, with its newest Youth Connector initiative that will launch shortly. In brief, MMOT will seek and recruit the right person to collaborate with our youth (secondary students), to facilitate a fortnightly after school hours function. The functions will be decided by the community youth and families and held in the gymnasium. Long-term wellbeing data, highlights this need as our children and youth are hungry for more events and connection opportunities outside of school.
Kind regards,
Mr John Robertson

Mrs E’s Japanese Corner
In Year 2-4 class, we have continued the unit “The Hungry Caterpillar”. Students had been learning the names of the fruit, names of the days of the weeks and “I ate ~~~on ~~~day” sentences structure. They are now working on the final piece of the task, which is making a book “The Hungry ---” in Japanese.
Y7/8 class completed their personal profile in Japanese. Students continued learning the sentences structure to introduce themselves as they have revisited their identity through their culture.

This semester, the 9/10 class has focused on plan, design and construct. We utilised the PRIDEPE (Problem, Restrictions, Investigation, Design, Estimate, Produce, Evaluate) to complete our projects. For my project, I constructed a desk using white melamine and cam and dowel joints. I made a few mistakes in the process but they were overcome. The experience was educational, and I found the process both engaging and enjoyable.

Yr 10
During Tech this semester, I decided to make a coat rack for mum, but I wanted to do some upcycling. I decide to use some old rusty horseshoes from our horse yard as the hangers. Using my past knowledge from doing tack welds last year, I was able (with some help) to weld together my horseshoes. After painting and staining the horseshoes and wood, I was able to drill and screw the whole product together. I enjoyed Tech this year and I can’t wait to build something next year.

Students in the 7-9 HASS class have been learning all about the world of business this term. They were given a $20 budget to design a business with the goal of making a profit.
On Wednesday 3rd July Week 10, @12pm students will be showcasing their business skills and selling their products at our $20 Market Day for the whole school.
Students will have several food items for sale including cupcakes, jello-shots, sugar crystals and hotdogs. There will also be some handmade bookmarks, bracelets and fidget toys for sale. Items range from $1-5.
Parents and caregivers are invited to attend and support our students. All profits will be donated to a local charity.
Bring some cash, EFTPOS will also be available.

This term in English, the 7-10s were delighted to find a Harry Potter-themed classroom upon their return for Term 2. Through this magical lens, students engaged with the curriculum in new and imaginative ways. The Harry Potter theme has made learning fun and exciting, encouraging students to explore English more creatively. They have been thoroughly involved, competing for house points to win a class pizza party in the last week of term.
Some of the assessment tasks we covered using this theme included:
- Student Character Profiles
- Hogwarts First Aid Procedure Texts
- Written Reflections and Evaluations
- A Timeline of the Evolution of the English Language with a specific focus on the Latin influence
- Etymology of words and phrases we use today
- Poetry Creation
- Creating Advertising and News Articles
- Fantasy Genre Spelling Words
Some comments from students:
Bailey Taylor - The way that Mrs McKenzie has decorated the English room is magical. It is everything that a 12-year-old me would have wanted in a classroom and more.
Penny Castle - I’ve only seen the first movie, and even I appreciate the decorations. I also appreciate the creative freedom we have with this unit :D
Tyron Baehnk – I really enjoyed it and I think it was a fun way to learn English.
Lily Durant - I enjoyed the whole term and have looked forward to English more often now. The Harry Potter theme has been a lot of fun and has given English a fun name. I have always wanted a Harry Potter themed lesson and Mrs McKenzie has granted my wish.
Star Green - This whole term has been so fun and I have really enjoyed this unit. The wands were very fun to make and it was a good opportunity to use your creative skills and have a bit of fun. The First Aid Procedure Text was also very interesting to do and it was fun to learn about what different wounds were and how to treat them.
SPORTS REPORT - TAG RUGBY & YR 5/6 DISTRICT BASKETBALL
Tag Rugby Sessions
On Wednesday, week 7, we had the special guest Casey from NRL conducting the tag rugby session. Students from Reception to Year 10 got to learn the basic skills of tag rugby and played some games. I am looking forward to getting her back to conduct the tackle rugby sessions for our students in the future.
Y5/6 District Basketball Carnival
On Tuesday, week 8, most of the Year 5/6 class has participated in the District Basketball Carnival that was held in Murray Bridge Basketball Association Court. For many of our students, it would have been the first time to play the game of Basketball against the other schools, but they all played their best and had a great day. Girls had received a Runner-up trophy for the Small School group.

I thought I’d share this article as it spoke to me and I’m sure all parents and anyone caring for children can relate to it as well. It’s easier said than done but it’s good to be mindful that our children do copy us. As it says at the end, we don’t need to be perfect, but if we treat others with kindness and respect then (hopefully!) our children will too. I hope the ideas will be helpful. Keep up the great parenting.
