YEAR 7-10 ENGLISH
This term in English, the 7-10s were delighted to find a Harry Potter-themed classroom upon their return for Term 2. Through this magical lens, students engaged with the curriculum in new and imaginative ways. The Harry Potter theme has made learning fun and exciting, encouraging students to explore English more creatively. They have been thoroughly involved, competing for house points to win a class pizza party in the last week of term.
Some of the assessment tasks we covered using this theme included:
- Student Character Profiles
- Hogwarts First Aid Procedure Texts
- Written Reflections and Evaluations
- A Timeline of the Evolution of the English Language with a specific focus on the Latin influence
- Etymology of words and phrases we use today
- Poetry Creation
- Creating Advertising and News Articles
- Fantasy Genre Spelling Words
Some comments from students:
Bailey Taylor - The way that Mrs McKenzie has decorated the English room is magical. It is everything that a 12-year-old me would have wanted in a classroom and more.
Penny Castle - I’ve only seen the first movie, and even I appreciate the decorations. I also appreciate the creative freedom we have with this unit :D
Tyron Baehnk – I really enjoyed it and I think it was a fun way to learn English.
Lily Durant - I enjoyed the whole term and have looked forward to English more often now. The Harry Potter theme has been a lot of fun and has given English a fun name. I have always wanted a Harry Potter themed lesson and Mrs McKenzie has granted my wish.
Star Green - This whole term has been so fun and I have really enjoyed this unit. The wands were very fun to make and it was a good opportunity to use your creative skills and have a bit of fun. The First Aid Procedure Text was also very interesting to do and it was fun to learn about what different wounds were and how to treat them.
