HI SRAS community, Last newsletter, I gave you a snippet of the information that is in a new brochure from my employer, SMG (Schools Ministry Group), about PCWs (Pastoral Care Workers) in South Australian schools. Here is my second snippet – Some Mental Health Facts Suicide continues to be the leading cause of death for young Australians. The Top 5 issues in South Australian schools are: o Friendship o Mental Health o Education Support o Self Esteem o Bullying Half of all the mental health conditions we experience at some point in our lives will have started by age 14. Since COVID-19, emergency department (mental health) presentations amongst young people have increased by 47.1% per annum. 75% of mental health problems occur before the age of 25. Increase in mental health service use by 30-55% from June 2020 to February 2021, especially amongst girls and those from disadvantaged areas. These are sobering statistics aren’t they – but take heart – schools across our state are equipped with resources to help students find the help they need. Getting the right help early on is the best way to prevent long term mental health issues. Please reach out and let us know if your child needs help.
