PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Hello Swan Reach,

It was pleasing to see SRAS students participate in Remembrance Day Ceremonies. The secondary students joined in with the community ceremony led by the Swan Reach sub-branch of the RSL. On our vision it states that “SRAS will develop students… who are collaborative contributors to their community,”so this recent participation demonstrates their contribution through joining in honouring all service personnel who have given to our nation. The primary classes held a ceremony at SRAS, in front of the flagpoles. They showed high respect in the way they listened, stood proudly and sang our anthem. “Lest we forget.”

2020 HOME GROUPS

SRAS has decided upon the home groups detailed below:

  • Kindergarten / Reception
  • Year 1-3
  • Year 4-6
  • Year 7-10 for HG and electives only (7/8s and 9/10s will have separate classes for core learning subjects)
  • Year 11/12

We are working through subject selections that will impact teacher loads and hope to communicate as much 2020 staffing as possible before the term ends. Our mantra through out this complex process is “what is the best model we are able to facilitate for our students?”

STUDENT FREE DAY (SFD)

A reminder that Governing Council has approved a student free day, on Friday 22nd November, that will be used for intensive 2020 site improvement planning.

Early Learning Centre News

Term 4 has come around too quickly. The growth and development that 3-4 year olds make in a year is quite amazing and very true for all of our pre-schoolers. It is amazing to think they are now transitioning into the reception class, in preparation for starting school next year. At the end of last term we continued our orientation of the ‘big kid’s areas’ by visiting Mr Jesser in the music room. Mr Jesser showed the children all the instruments that they could learn and everyone danced to his guitar performance. He also took us to the Art room where the year 12s were working on their paintings. It was quite special for some of the youngest members of our school community to witness the oldest members (apart from staff and parents!) working hard to finish off their last pieces of work. We wish them all the best as their schooling years at Swan Reach come to an end. We were lucky enough to borrow some of the smaller instruments from the music department and the children have been enjoying performing for each other.

We had an amazing time at the start of this term, looking through the helicopter that landed on the oval. The pilot, Andrew was waiting for his passengers from the Variety Club to get back, and was kind enough to show us how it worked and let the children sit in the back seat.

In other news, we currently have the Swan Reach Kindy Hospital set up in our role play area. If you would like a checkup with one of our ‘doctors’, feel free to come and visit. Our doctors specialise in checking heartbeats, bandaging arms and legs, giving injections, looking at xrays and administering medicine. They are bound to make you feel better!

Our new mud kitchen and bench have finally arrived and it looks great! Children have been busy making things and having ‘dinner’. We need to say a BIG THANKYOU to Mr Greg Griffiths and his Doorways to Construction crew for putting up the shades to keep us safe from the sun, and to Mr James Horstmann for the delivery and installation of the benches.

Mrs Trish Horstmann

Years 2-5 Excursion

On Thursday 7th November, the 2-5 class went to The National Motor Museum in Birdwood. The students took the opportunity to be part of a production line and build model T-Fords to take home. Students also had to complete a number of games where the answers were hidden around the museum. All students had a wonderful day exploring the museum and looking in the car cave.

MATHS OLYMPICS

On Wednesday 6th November, nine students from Year 8-10 represented our School at the Maths Olympics at Glossop High School. This annual event which attracts a lot of interest is sponsored by the Riverland Secondary Schools Alliance.

Throughout the Day, students participated in 4 competitive rounds: a Maths and General Knowledge Quiz, a Beat the Buzzer (short Maths questions – no calculators allowed) Competition, a Science and Engineering Challenge, and a Maths Relay.

This year’s competition was fierce but I was glad to see most, if not all of our students, take up the challenge. After all, just having a go is what it’s all about. Although we didn’t win, I was genuinely impressed to see how our students were able to transfer knowledge learnt in class to help solve practical real word problems under competitive conditions within very short time constraints.

Thank you to all the Maths Teachers and Coordinators from the participating schools who helped make this event so successful. Also a special thank you to our parents and to Mr Carter who got up so early to make sure we all left punctually and arrived on time.

Mr Tun
