PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Welcome back for the start of Term 3. I hope that you have had an enjoyable and relaxing break and are all set for a busy and productive term ahead. I value your positive energy and dedication to excellence in education, and I look forward to working with you and your children.

Staffing

We wish Mr Robertson all the best with his holiday overseas and his well-deserved long service leave. With this comes the great opportunity for me to take on the role of Acting Principal for the first 6 weeks of term along with Mrs Trish Horstmann taking on the role of Primary and Early Years Leader.

Mrs Katie O’Shaughnessy is on holiday for the first week of term and we welcome back Ms Liz Woodgate as a SSO working in the Primary.

Students

Good luck to Saphira, Nixon, Savannah and Tahni with their new ventures at other schools and a warm welcome to new students Layla – Reception, Shianne – Year 7, Lucy – Year 8 and Teija – Year 9 to the Swan Reach community.

All the best to Dillan Cockburn with his transition into the workforce. Through the help of Wise Employment Dillan is employed by the Swan Reach Hotel.

Year 12 Students

It is a busy time for our year 12 students as their final year of schooling starts to come to a point. It is essential that they are focused on their learning now in order to ease the pressures of next term and make a smooth transition from school into the wider community.

Pedal Prix

I’m excited to see the progression of Black Swan Racing as they compete at Victoria Park this Sunday 23rd July from 9:00am to 3:00pm. This race is a good lead up to the Murray Bridge 24 hour race on 21st September.

Student Free Day

Staff were busy improving their knowledge in a range of different areas including our Site Improvement focus on comprehension, problem solving and oral language development. While other staff visited with like teachers from different sites to network and share ideas and practices. These day are extremely valuable to ensure that we are providing the best possible service to your children.

It is an honour and privilege to serve as your Principal. Please stop by and say hello. Together, I know we will make this school term one of growth and achievement for all children.

Acting Principal

ELC NEWS

Last term the Early Learning Centre did a lot of learning about the Indigenous culture and Reconciliation. It built on from Term 1’s discussions around ‘Harmony,” and will continue into this term, with Naidoc week being celebrated in the holidays. Children have been immersed in the aboriginal culture by reading aboriginal tales and learning songs. Children have particularly enjoyed singing and dancing to the song, “Red, Black and Yellow.” They loved showing it at the whole school assembly for everyone to hear and see. We also farewelled Saphira at the assembly and everyone shared in her ‘kindy graduation ceremony’. Saphira is starting school at Blanchetown this week and we wish her all the best.

Children have painted still life pictures of echidnas and parrots, taken from Aboriginal dreaming stories. We even had a guest artist, Heidi’s brother Svenn, who is an expert at drawing parrots, demonstrated how to draw and paint the perfect parrot. We read the Ngarrindjeri story, “The Thukeri Fish,” and used rollers to paint fish. The children’s paintings look beautiful up on our walls. We would love everyone to come visit us at the ELC and take a look.

CHILD PROTECTION CURRICULUM

KEEPING SAFE: CHILD PROTECTION CURRICULUM (KS: CPC)

All Department for Education sites are required to provide the Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum (KS:CPC) to all children and young people from Preschool to Year 12. Staff delivering the curriculum must complete a full day face-to-face training as outlined in the Department for Education policy.

Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum in in Early Years and Primary School.

At SRAS, students in K-7 are involved in KS: CPC lessons throughout the year. Please read the overview below. More specific information for each year level will be included in newsletters during the term, or you can follow the web link below:

In addition, students in Years 5-10 are involved in specific SHINE lessons. SHINE stands for Sexual Health Information Networking and Education. Years 5-10 will be starting lessons towards the end of Term 3 and will continue into Term 4.

SHINE SA is the Department for Education’s approved training provider for Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum (KS:CPC) professional learning. SHINE SA provides a range of services to support schools to implement a whole school approach to relationships and sexual health education. SHINE SA has developed a comprehensive Years 5-10 relationships and sexual health curriculum and associated resources which are age and developmentally appropriate. The units are taught separately to each group by our fully trained health teachers, Mrs Yuka Endersby and Mr Alex Pfeiffer. More comprehensive information will come home soon about this important program.

Any queries about SHINE or Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum, please contact your child’s health teacher.

Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum (KS:CPC)

The Department for Education Child protection in schools, early childhood education and care services policy (2015) states that ‘all children and young people in DECD preschools and schools will access the approved child protection curriculum’.

The KS:CPC teaches children and young people to recognise abuse, tell a trusted adult, understand what is appropriate and inappropriate touching and ways of keeping themselves safe.

Themes

The curriculum is based on two main themes which are presented through topics and activities.

  • Theme 1: We all have the right to be safe
  • Theme 2: We can help ourselves to be safe by talking to people we trust.

Focus Areas

The two themes are explored through four Focus Areas, which are examined in growing complexity in accordance with the age of the learners.

  1. The right to be safe
  2. Relationships
  3. Recognising and reporting abuse
  4. Protective strategies.

More information can be found on the KS:CPC website:

TERM 2 SPORTS REVIEW

Term 2 saw multiple school sports take place. The eight, nine and ten grades participated in the annual 9-a-side Football carnival at Karoonda and represented the school with passion and pride. SRAS were combined with Karoonda Area School and both schools combined well to form powerhouse football side. The other main schools sport that occurred was 5-a-side soccer, which also took place at Karoonda. SRAS entered one girls team and the boys combined with Coomandook. Once again, all students represented SRAS to an exceptional standard which was rewarded with a trip to the local café to treat themselves in pastries and sweets. The girls team finished 4th overall which included a massive 9 -2 victory in their final match. The boys were also very successful finishing in the middle of their group as well. Big thankyou to all students involved in these school sports and the parents that promptly returned their consent forms.

ADELAIDE PEDAL PRIX

Just a reminder that our second race will be on Sunday 28 July at Victoria Park, Adelaide. We are in Pit Lane No: 26 (which is in a different position from last year on the south eastern corner of the track) and will be racing from 10am-4pm.

Pedal Prix Teacher

JAPANESE STUDENT VISIT

I hope you all had a relaxing school holiday. I would like to inform you that this year’s Undoukai will be happening during students’ Japanese lesson time on Tuesday Week 2 (30th July 2019). Please note this is a different format to previous Undokai sports days. We will have 10 Japanese students staying with Mannum Community College families, and their Australian buddies. I hope all the students who are learning Japanese get to speak to Japanese students and share each others’ culture.

Mrs Yuka Endersby
Japanese Teacher

PRIMARY NEWS

Welcome back for Term 3 to all of our Primary students and families. There were lots of eager faces jumping off the buses this morning! Let’s hope they stay eager for the next 10 weeks as we tackle what Term 3 has in store. Some events to look forward to:

  • Japanese students visiting from Mannum, Tuesday, week 2
  • Footsteps Dance, Thursdays, week 3-6
  • R-5 camp, Tuesday/Thursday, week 8
  • SCHOOL CLOSURE, Friday, week 7

More information will be sent home about these events, and more, as the term goes on.

Each morning as a break during the Primary classes literacy block, you will find the R-7 students outside running off some energy during morning fitness. This is a great chance to give their brains a break, while keeping the body and mind fit and healthy. It is also a wonderful opportunity for students from Reception to year 7 to work together. It is especially great for our older students to learn leadership skills and compassion while helping the younger ones. The following photos show you how happy our students are to be back at school and outside for fitness on the first day of term 3!
