Many thanks to the attendees at last Friday’s live webinar, facilitated by engaging presenter, Martin Heppell, from The Resilience Project (TRP). Many thanks also to Mid Murray Our Town (MMOT), for funding and co-organising this community event. MMOT sourced TRP, to assist community mental health as part of the recovery needed, due to the prolonged effects of the flood that many are experiencing.
Whilst numbers were low, those present were highly grateful, inspired and enthused by Martin’s message that embrace TRP’s GEM (gratitude, empathy, mindfulness – and emotional literacy) practices. These are simple strategies that help build mental health and resilience in the face of adversity. No doubt, the attendees will be advocating TRP and have a deeper insight into why SRAS has chosen to engage children and students in GEM.
SRAS and the local community are fortunate that the live webinar was recorded. The link below will be open until 11th July, 2023. The link is also on the SRAS and MMOT Face Book pages.
WELCOME
SRAS warmly welcomes Meika and her family to the preschool.
REPORTS (A-E GRADES)
With mid-term reports imminent, it is timely to refresh our understanding of the Australian Curriculum (AC) grades and their contemporary. There are 4 key considerations:
- The grade given for the mid-year report is an indicator that a child is progressing toward the likelihood of achieving this grade by the end of the year
- A ‘C’ grade means a child is meeting the Australian and DfE standard – this is the expectation and shows that they are ‘at standard’ or satisfactory
- An ‘A or B’ grade means a child is exceeding the Australian and DfE standard – this shows that they are ‘above standard’ (A = excellent and B = good)
- A ‘D or E’ grade means a child is not meeting the Australian and DfE standard – this shows that they are ‘below standard’ (D = partial and E = minimal)
DIFFERING TYPES OF INTELLIGENCES
The Resilience Project GEM practices, promote and foster development of an intelligence called the ‘Adversity Quotient’ (see article below posted by IDEAS Institute of Dyslexia Education & Attitudinal Studies).
“According to Psychologists, there are four types of Intelligence:
1) Intelligence Quotient (IQ)
2) Emotional Quotient (EQ)
3) Social Quotient (SQ)
4) Adversity Quotient (AQ)
- Intelligence Quotient (IQ): this is the measure of your level of comprehension. You need IQ to solve maths, memorize things, and recall lessons.
- Emotional Quotient (EQ): this is the measure of your ability to maintain peace with others, keep to time, be responsible, be honest, respect boundaries, be humble, genuine and considerate.
- Social Quotient (SQ): this is the measure of your ability to build a network of friends and maintain it over a long period of time.
People that have higher EQ and SQ tend to go further in life than those with a high IQ but low EQ and SQ. Most schools capitalize on improving IQ levels while EQ and SQ are played down.
A man of high IQ can end up being employed by a man of high EQ and SQ even though he has an average IQ.
Your EQ represents your Character, while your SQ represents your Charisma. Give in to habits that will improve these three Qs, especially your EQ and SQ.
Now there is a 4th one, a new paradigm:
- The Adversity Quotient (AQ): The measure of your ability to go through a rough patch in life, and come out of it without losing your mind.
When faced with troubles, AQ determines who will give up, who will abandon their family, and who will consider suicide.
Parents, please expose your children to other areas of life than just Academics. They should adore manual labour (never use work as a form of punishment), Sports and Arts.
Develop their IQ, as well as their EQ, SQ and AQ. They should become multifaceted human beings able to do things independently of their parents.
Finally, do not prepare the road for your children. Prepare your children for the road."

MR & MRS GRIFFITHS - TRV CHECK IN
We have travelled over 15000 km to date and made our way down the south coast of Western Australia. We have spent some time with my sister, Mandy who lives at Warradarge and works for Ilukamining company. From there we visited Perth and toured the lovely city on a red double-decker bus seeing Optus stadium, the WACA and Crown casino. Augusta is a very beautiful town near Cape Leeuwin which has amazing coastal views and we were lucky enough to spot a large pod of whales which were very captivating. The last few days we have spent with Greg’s cousin Tony, helping him out on the farm at Denbarker. The cold, wet weather has finally caught up with us and they have had rain here 12 days out of 14, with a total of 6 inches for the month! We had a big feed of Marron (big yabbies) from one of Tony’s neighbours who breeds them in dams. At the end of the week we will travel to Albany and Esperance and then make our way across the Nullarbor as we gradually head for home.
