SRAS students and staff have experienced a number of illnesses over the term, with some catching bugs for a second and third time. This, on top of the extra-curricular activities, public holidays and student free day over the term, have impacted on general schooling routines that we haven’t experience since pre-COVID years. Therefore, the 3-Way Conversations are timely and allow us to re-share routines, expectations, communicate concerns, data and celebrate successes together. Thank you to all families who are making time in their busy schedules to support their child(ren) at these meetings. It was terrific to see the students alongside parents / carers and teachers and have their voice heard.
SRAS acknowledges that the time allocated for the conversations is quite short and encourages families to request follow-up conversations as needed throughout the year. Whilst SRAS sends home traffic lights, tick boxes (for secondary in term 1 & 3), and reports, to keep you informed of your child(ren)’s progress over the year, you may be keen to know more about your child(ren)’s general progress in-between. Where face-to-face meetings are not possible, there are several other options available that are listed below:
- DayMap communication – message the teacher directly using this mode
- Email communication – message the teacher directly using this mode
- SMS – via the school mobile
- Phone conversation – arrange a time via the front office
- SeeSaw communication – message the teacher directly suing this mode
When finished, your child(ren)’s Individual Learning Plan (ILP) will be made available through DayMap or SeeSaw for your review. As teachers review these with students throughout the year, they’ll be updated and reposted.

As you may be aware, vaping has become increasingly popular among young people in recent years. While some may view vaping as a safer alternative to smoking traditional cigarettes, the truth is that it poses serious health risks.
Vaping involves inhaling an aerosol, often referred to as vapor, which is produced by an electronic cigarette or other vaping device. This aerosol typically contains nicotine, which is highly addictive, as well as other harmful chemicals and heavy metals such as formaldehyde, acrolein, and lead.
The health implications of vaping are numerous and serious. Nicotine is known to have harmful effects on the developing brain, which can negatively impact learning, memory, and attention. It can also increase the risk of addiction, anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues. In addition, the other chemicals found in vaping products can cause damage to the lungs, heart, and other organs, leading to a variety of health problems.
At our school, we take the health and well-being of our students very seriously. We strongly encourage all students to avoid vaping and other tobacco products, and to make informed choices about their health. We also provide resources and support for students who may be struggling with addiction or other related issues.
If you or someone you know is struggling with addiction or other health issues related to vaping or tobacco use, please do not hesitate to reach out to a trusted adult or a health professional for help.

RIVER MALLEE AND DISTRICTS ATHLETICS
Last Tuesday, 14th March, SRAS had eight secondary students compete at the River Mallee & Districts (RMD) Athletics Day at Karoonda Town Oval. Congratulations to Jasmine Challenor, Naite Gribble, Jacob Hodge, Ella Johnson, Tehya Fawdry, Tommy Trezise-Donald, Jade Durant and Maliyah Haby for representing our school in this competition. As SRAS is combined with Meningie Area School for this event, our competing students had to not only win their events from our Athletics Day, but they also had to out throw/jump/run the best competing students from Meningie. Our students were given a great opportunity to represent our school and gain valuable experience competing against the highest performing athletes from a range of schools in our district, including: Karoonda, Tintinara, Mannum, Coomandook, Keith and Lameroo.
In total, our selected students competed in approximately 40 events across the day, displaying great sportsmanship throughout. A few key highlights for the day included a first place for Jacob in the shot put, Jazzy came first in the open girls 100m and Tehya came 2nd in all of her seven events. Tehya also came runner up for the 14-year-old girls age group. Overall, every SRAS student finished in the top three for at least one of their events, which is an awesome achievement in this highly competitive carnival.
Congratulations to Jazzy, Jacob and Tehya for being selected in the River Mallee and Districts team, set to be held at SANTOS Stadium in Adelaide on the 31st of March. Finally, a big thank you to the parents who dropped off/picked up their child early in the morning and late in the afternoon. Also, thank you to both Troy Cowland and Kate Howie for their assistance with running this day for our students.

The students in years 5 and 6, have been doing Harmony Week activities, and as part of our Literacy Program, they looked at procedure writing. We looked at how to make Sushi. They followed a recipe and procedural instructions to get an end result.
This experience allowed for us to work with Joke from Mid Murray Our Town which was a big hit with our students.

I want to share with you a fitness challenge that has a deeper meaning and a collective goal. As you may know, 3,144 Australians lost their lives to suicide in 2021. To honour their memory and raise awareness for mental health, I'm inviting you to join me in the 3,144 push-up challenge.
But I don't want to do it alone! I want to get a group of students together to collectively get 3,144 push-ups in 23 days, which equals 137 push-ups per day. Students that are interested can let me know, and we'll form a team to support each other along the way.
We'll be meeting at the outdoor learning area every recess during the month of June to complete our daily push-up goal. Don't worry if you can't do push-ups, as they can be replaced with activities like star jumps, sit-ups, cartwheels, etc. The important thing is that we're all working together towards a common goal.
I encourage you to join me in this challenge and make a difference in our own lives and in the lives of others. We can use this challenge to start conversations about mental health, raise awareness, and support those who may be going through a tough time. Together, we can achieve the goal of 3,144 push-ups and show our solidarity with those affected by suicide.
If you're interested in joining the challenge, let me know. Let's make June a month of physical and mental health, and honour the lives lost to suicide in the process.
