Thank you to our school community for your strong support at last week’s Sports Day. Once again, the weather was comfortable, enabling maximum participation from students and children. A hearty congratulations to the Mallee Kangaroos, who were victorious, but also to the Murray Eagles, who were highly competitive all day. Some of the individual battles were terrific to watch, including the highly competitive and contentious ‘fireman’s relay’ between staff and parents / carers – bragging rights go to the parents and carers but one could easily ask for video evidence and replay of friendly interference from both teams. A massive thank you to; students and children for their participation and success, families for their support, P&F for their catering, Mr Phil Carter for the wonderful condition of the oval, Mr Jayden Coleman for his organisation and all staff for their encouragement and support throughout the day and leading up to it.
Principal
Mr John Robertson
SRAS strongly encourage all parents, cares and students to make a booking for an interview (face to face, telephone or written) with their child’s teacher(s). Bookings can be made through Daymap by following the link on your home page. You are still welcome to organise 3-way conversations by phoning the front office. If these times/dates are not suitable, contact the individual teacher and organise a suitable time.
Attendance at an interview is highly desirable as it gives parents / caregivers and students the opportunity to receive more information regarding their child’s learning and their goals using the Individual Learning Plan (ILP) template. If you have already consulted your child’s teachers during the course of another learning plan and would still like to have an interview feel free to make a booking.
3-Way Conversations will be held on Tuesday 21st March and Wednesday 22nd March.
NOTE WELL
- The school will close early on Tuesday 21st March at 2.20pm to allow for parents and carers to access earlier timeslots
- Buses will depart at 2.30pm
- Conferences will begin at 2.40pm
- Preschool conversations will be held with Mrs Trish Horstmann on Tuesday 21st March in the ELC (23rd and 24th March negotiable, please contact Front Office).

GUM BALL MACHINES
We are looking at the Department for Education Unit of work 2, Cogs, Gears and Spindles. The children have been busy working on Gum Ball machines. Each machine needed to have and show parts of a machine which had cogs, gears and spindles. The Gum Ball machine below, shows representations of a working cog and gear, which also included a ramp.
To follow-on from this the children discussed making a car. They wanted to make a Pedal Prix Car, but we have discussed this and they will design and build a box car which will move.

SRAS Sports Day
Firstly, I’d like to send a huge thank you and congratulations to all involved in our 2023 SRAS Sports Day last Friday! The participation and combined involvement from students, parents, carers, family members and staff was easily the best I’ve seen in my time at the school. To all who were involved, big or small, I would like to personally thank you for contributing to this great whole-school event!
Now, time to look back at some of the incredible achievements and triumphs on this amazing day for our students.
I would like to firstly credit all of our students who participated in the combined 3000m/1000m event, held on Wednesday, 1st March. All together, we had over 50 students compete in the combined event – the most we’ve ever had since this event started back in 2020. Our pre-carnival events also had a new change to our Thursday morning, with the addition of the discus. This was also a new event for our junior students, who traditionally have never competed in discus. Congratulations to all winners and especially to both Lily Durant and Tyler Von Zieden, who set the new records for these events in the juniors (they also both set the new record for the junior shot put, which was held for the first time on Sports Day).
As witnessed in the action-packed finish to the day, students competed in a number of fun and exciting team games, including the baton relay, tunnel ball, cross pass, firemen’s relay and tug of war to name a few. These events provided all students with the opportunity to participate and be a part of a team. Parents were even able to get in on the action of the firemen’s relay, competing against the almighty staff. Without doubt, the staff again charged home to take the win in the firemen’s relay, providing some much needed ‘cooling off’ at the end of the day.
Participation for the day was simply outstanding! We had over 50 students receive a ‘Road Runner’ certificate – competing in every single event for their respective age group on the day. It was also a highlight to once again have our pre-school students join in with our mini-sub juniors this year. Some incredible moments of teamwork, sportsmanship and participation was seen throughout the day.
A special mention among our student competitors must go to Lily Durant. Lily broke a 20-year-old high jump record for the junior girls, narrowly beating Ebony Grieger’s record by 1cm. What a brilliant achievement – well done Lily!
Overall, a big congratulations to the Mallee Kangaroos on winning the SRAS Sports Day for 2023. Also, congratulations to the individual trophy winners who are listed below.
I would like to thank the efforts of many important people who volunteered their time to help make this day both possible and successful. There are simply not enough staff members to be able to run all of the different activities that are held on this day. I send out a huge thank you to the following people who volunteered to help marshal: Troy Haby, Jonno Wenske, Klaus Gierke, Sarah Bolt, Patrick Woods, Geoff Dabinet, Shane McGrath and Janet Lebrun. Thank you also to anyone else who helped out at particular events in need throughout the day.
Once again, I sincerely thank the incredible work done by our Parents & Friends team to provide lunch along with Steve Hennessey who helped cook the BBQ. They are simply amazing! I look forward to working with you all again later in the year.
I save the last thank you for all of the staff who helped me with preparation, set up and pack up of this event. I would like to especially thank the efforts of our groundsman, Phil Carter. We are SO lucky to have Phil at SRAS and we simply couldn’t hold this event without him!
Finally, I would like to congratulate the students who have been selected to participate in the River Mallee & Districts (formerly Upper South East) athletics day, to be held at Karoonda next Tuesday, 14th March. Well done to the following students on your selection: Kai Gribble, Jazzy Challenor, Ella Johnson, Naite Gribble, Jacob Hodge, Tehya Fawdry, Jade Durant, Tommy Trezise-Donald & Maliyah Haby. These secondary students will combine with Meningie Area School for this event. Our selected primary students will compete in the Murray Mallee SAPSASA team, at a separate event held later in the year. More information to come on this closer to the date.

Mr Jayden Coleman
Sports Coordinator
Hi and welcome back to school for the 2023 school year. (I know we are half-way through the term already, but this is my first newsletter for the year).
I would like to say a big welcome to the new students and their families this year. I trust that your time at SRAS will be positive and enjoyable. Over the years, I have often heard comments that SRAS is a lovely school to be in. The comments are usually made by work colleagues but I’ve had students and families say the same thing, so I don’t think I’m biased when I say that it’s a great school to be a part of!
I know that the last few months have been challenging for many people living and working in the river communities. I just want to say that my heart goes out to all those affected by the flood and I would love to help out where I can. I guess what a lot of people need now is help with the clean-up, more than anything. I encourage anyone who is feeling overwhelmed and not finding the help and support they need, to reach out to me at school. I’m not saying that I can fix everything, by any means, but I do have support behind me in various forms that could be useful to point us in the right direction. Don’t struggle alone. Even if you just need a listening ear, I’m here.
Something new that I started last year was to give out birthday presents to students. Many students have already chosen presents – those who had their birthdays from the start of January to now. I have a lot of gifts to choose from so I only set them out about once a month. So, if your child/teenager comes home with a present well after (or even before) their birthday, this is the reason why.
I look forward to catching up with as many families as possible during the year. I will try to be at most of the events that I know parents will attend, so come and say hi if you see me there.
If you or your child would like to contact me, my email address is Julie.maxwell32@schools.sa.edu.au or you can phone or text the school.
Warm Regards,
Julie Maxwell,
Pastoral Care Worker
