Hello Swan Reach,
To say that ‘we live in interesting times’ is quite pertinent – most generations would easily cite this quote. It wasn’t that long ago that COVID-19 was (and still is to a certain degree) creating havoc to our ‘normality’, and now we face the challenge of rising waters. SRAS empathises with those affected and wish the community the very best through this growing adversity.
SRAS is excited to facilitate an on-site community table tennis table. This is thanks to the successful Mid Murray Our Town (MMOT) funding submission won by Mr David Le Brun. While it’s intention and purpose is to promote and raise community connection and wellbeing, and is primarily for the community, we thank you for respecting schooling by accessing it after school hours – after 3:15pm weekdays.
Mr John Robertson
Principal
FAREWELL
We send on our best to Mr Ben and Mrs Katie O’Shaughnessy, and Isaac, as the family begins a new adventure and journey in their new communities of Rockleigh, Monarto and Murray Bridge. The move was always imminent but happened rapidly in the end. Thank you Katie for the tremendous energy, dedication, commitment and professionalism you brought to SRAS. Thank you too, Ben for the enormous assistance given to SRAS in your line of duty and additional ones, like looking after the pool so splendidly.
SRAS also sends out a warm and hearty farewell to Timothy and Markus as they begin a new chapter in their lives – we are going to miss you guys.

THE RESILIENCE PROJECT (TRP)
The following information provides more details about our engagement with TRP in 2023. It is exciting as it fully aligned with the Australian Curriculum, covers all our learners (P-12), our staff and also our families. Looking forward to this journey with you starting in 2023.

WHY YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS:
WHAT THE RESILIENCE PROJECT DELIVERS:
These statistics drive our commitment to teach positive strategies to help people build happiness and resilience. We are especially committed to delivering programs in early learning centres as well as primary and secondary schools – settings the recent Victorian Royal Commission and Productivity Commission revealed as having the biggest unmet need.
Our work in Education:
We are grateful and proud to have delivered wellbeing programs to over 1500 schools and early learning centres across Australia. Our schools program has been designed by teachers for teachers, and has been evaluated by the University of Melbourne.
Through presentations, student curriculum, teacher resources and digital content, The Resilience Project’s Education Programs support mental health in the classroom, staffroom and family home.
The research is clear; the more positive emotion you experience, the more resilient you will be. For that reason we focus on three key pillars that have been proven to cultivate positive emotion; Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness (GEM), with Emotional Literacy being a foundational skill to practise these strategies.
GRATITUDE Paying attention to the things we have right now, and not worrying about what we don't have. We practise gratitude by noticing the positives around us. |
EMPATHY Putting ourselves in the shoes of others so we feel what they are feeling. We practise empathy by being kind and compassionate towards other people. |
MINDFULNESS Our ability to be calm and in the present moment. We practise mindfulness by slowing down and concentrating on one thing at a time. |
EMOTIONAL LITERACY Our ability to label our emotions, which helps us to soften negative emotions and find positive emotions. We practise emotional literacy by labelling our emotions as we experience them. |
BUSHFIRE PROCEDURES ON CATASTROPHIC DAYS
Whilst summer scorchers seem somewhat distant, this is a timely reminder of our bushfire procedures.
On days where a Catastrophic Fire Danger rating is forecasted:
- all school bus routes travelling through any affected Fire Ban District(s) will be cancelled
- school will still be open and lessons will run as normal
If the Fire Ban rating changes to ‘Catastrophic’ during the day:
- school buses will operate as normal, unless advised otherwise by authorised Emergency Services personnel.
If a bushfire is reported in the area during the day:
- affected bus runs will not to leave the school until the roads are declared safe by emergency services authorities
Parents will be notified and students will be supervised at school, until buses can run, or until parents are able to collect their children.
RIVER MALLEE & DISTRICTS BASKETBALL
Last Friday, 1st November, SRAS had 5 students represent the River Mallee & Districts (formerly USE) 9/10 basketball sides. For the boys, we had Jacob and for the girls, we had Jazzy, Iesha, Cora (year 8) and Tehya (year 8).
I had the privilege of coaching our 9/10 girls’ team, who were unfortunately hit with some late withdrawals to the side, only leaving us with the bare minimum 5 players; our 4 girls from SRAS and Sascha Baker from Mannum Community College. The girls came up against Birdwood in our first game, where we came away with a comfortable 32-12 victory. In our second and final game we faced a massive challenge, taking on Mount Barker. It was clear in the warm up that the Mount Barker girls had played a lot of basketball, in comparison to our very inexperienced team. However, to the credit of our girls, we managed to take a narrow lead into each quarter time break of the game. In the final quarter, we were hit with a massive blow, as Jazzy unfortunately received her 5 fouls for the game, meaning she could no longer participate. Since we had no substitute players, the girls were forced to play the final 7 minutes with only 4 players. With only 10 seconds left they had managed to hold on to a 3-point lead, however, in the dying seconds Mount Barker were able to shoot a 3-pointer to draw the match. We were then required to play 5-minutes of ‘over-time’, however Jazzy was still unable to return to the court. In the end, the girls went down by 4 points in what was an amazing effort. It’s very difficult to put just how big of an achievement this is into perspective, considering the size of the schools that we faced and the fact we had 2 of our girls who are only in year 8. Incredible effort girls!
Jacob’s 9/10 boys’ side unfortunately didn’t have the same success as our girls, going down to both Oakbank and Mount Barker in their 2 matches. However, it was clear from the sidelines that the scores in both of those games didn’t indicate just how close they were to winning. Congratulations to all 5 of our students on their selection and positive representation of both SRAS and our RMD zone.

STAGE 2 Results

Congratulations, you did it. You’ve reached the end. 13 years of school. Nearly 5000 days as a student. All behind you. But, you’re not really finished, you’re actually just beginning…
You’ve reached the start of an unpredictable road. A road that may run straight just as you thought it would, or it might wind in a roundabout direction or branch off in ways you never expected. Given the ever-changing world that we’re in, it’s most likely to be the latter. But that’s the beauty of being at the beginning. There’s no way of knowing where you’ll end up. Continue to strive to be the best version of yourself, always seeking to improve. We wish you all the best.

Deputy Principal
