Hello Swan Reach,
The end of the term looms, and once again, another school holiday is drawing near. This time last term, numbers of students and staff present on-site were decimated as COVID took its toll. Unfortunately, yet again, we see COVID’s effects with a second ‘small wave’ being experienced at SRAS. One ponders just when pre-COVID ‘normality’ will ever return – will it? Is our current status quo our new ‘normal'? Hoping for all our families that this holiday break is much healthier, and ‘free’ from isolation than the previous one. Many thanks to our community for your utmost support to keep all as safe and healthy as possible, and for making the best through yet another challenging term. Many thanks too, to staff and students, for showing strong commitment to teaching and learning.
Semester 1 is scheduled to close with a whole school assembly, in the outdoor learning area on Friday 8th July at 1:45pm, followed by early closure at 2:10pm. Buses will depart at 2:15pm. Families are also invited to join us on Thursday, 7th July at 2:15pm, to listen to music performances from the 7-10 band and primary musicians. This will also occur in the outdoor learning area.
Have a wonderful and blessed holiday; whatever your family has planned, SRAS wishes you the best and hope you have a terrific time.
FAREWELL
We bid the fondest of farewells to Bonnie, as she departs SRAS, to continue her education interstate. We’ll certainly miss your cheerful smiles, positive attitude and helpful nature. Thanks for sharing your awesomeness with us and we wish you the very best for the next phase of your life journey and adventure.
SEMESTER 1 REPORTS
Semester 1 reports are being sent home this week. It is truly amazing to witness the amount of learning efforts being rewarded, despite the wide-spread effects of COVID-19. The growth for every learner is evident and a terrific outcome against sustained challenges. Our whole-school attendance rate has dipped below 80%, which is 13% lower than average for this time of year. Attendance reports accompanying academic ones, strongly acknowledge the negative impact COVID-19 has placed on your child(ren)’s attendance this semester.

We were lucky enough to have a visit last Friday from our friend, Mim Bjelovarac, the director of Tinyeri Children’s Centre in Murray Bridge. Mim is currently the acting Early Childhood Leader for our area and was excited to be able to spend the day with us and meet our gorgeous preschoolers and occasional care children. It was great to have Mim share some of her expertise and to hear that we are definitely on track with meeting children’s learning and well-being needs. Mim’s ideas and encouragement will help us as we continually aim to chase better, by tweeking and improving some of our assessment and planning strategies.
While she was here, Mim read Wombat Stew by Mem Fox, to some of the children. The children then used many of the wonderful resources we have around our centre to make their own version of wombat stew in the mud kitchen! Mim then got to enjoy the musical performance we put on for her during together time. Thanks for visiting us Mim.

R-2 CLASS
We have had a very busy Term in the R-2 class. We have seen many changes and been going with the flow for a lot of our subjects. This term we have had a huge focus on using complex terminology and improving our literacy routine and our skills. We have changed our literacy routine to have a larger focus on segmenting words into their individual sounds; this is now being done daily and the improvement can be seen through all students reading and writing. Our PowerPoint also allows us to practice tricky words, handwriting and implements a variety of other games to help embed literacy into our everyday lives.
Some of the words/ sayings you may have heard your child use
Phoneme: “A phoneme is the sound we hear with our ear”
Grapheme: “A grapheme is the sound we write”
Diagraph: “A diagraph is two letters which makes one phoneme” e.g. sh, th
Trigraph: “A trigraph is three letters which makes one phoneme” e.g. ure, air
Happy Holidays Everyone

DESIGN TECHNOLOGIES
TECH STUDIES
The Year 9/10 class have investigated materials, systems, components and tools to make a useful item from timber. They have developed skills in operating tools and machines. They are learning to consider time, cost, risks and production when constructing their item.
The Year 11/12 students (Stage 1 and Stage 2) have been working on their design skills which include producing sketches, technical drawings and specifications to construct an item made from timber. They are required to compile a folio that provides evidence of their progress throughout the production stages. The folio documents skill tasks, product records and includes an investigation which involves analysing economical/sustainability issues within project solutions. Projects include a TV cabinet and a bar cupboard.
HOME EC
The Year 7/8 class were introduced to health and safety in the kitchen. They also investigated food from different cultures and prepared meals with Thai, Indian and Italian flavours.
PEDAL PRIX
This semester Black Swan Racing competed at 'The Bend' in the 6-hour event and came 66th out of 150 teams. The team also prepared and served dinner at the Nildottie Hall raising over $1100 which will go toward the cost of new jumpers and associated running costs.
AGRICULTURE
The Year 7-10 students have been trellising capsicums, packing and selling our fruit and citrus. They are learning to recognise and report hazards in the workplace and follow WH&S procedures and directions. They have the opportunity to safely and correctly operate the Ag machinery and can complete the standard pre-operational checks.
CERTIFICATE II HORTICULTURE
Students have developed employability skills which are embedded in the units of competency as part of this subject. They have addressed the importance of safety in the workplace. They are working towards improving their ability to safely and correctly operate the Ag machinery and complete standard pre-operational checks under supervision.

STRAWBERRY BANANA BREAD
What are the autumn and winter fruits?
The winter fruits are bananas, pears, apples, oranges, and kiwi.
The Autumn fruits are apples, oranges, pears, melons, grapes and grapefruit.
Why did you choose this recipe?
The recipe I have chosen is strawberry banana bread and I would like to make it.
I chose this recipe because I love sweet food and it’s also easy to make. Little kids might enjoy making this with their parents.
The website I used: therecipecritic.com/strawberry-banana-bread/
Ingredients
1/2 cup butter (1 Stick) softened
1 cup granulated sugar
2 large eggs beaten
3 ripe bananas mashed
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups fresh strawberries chopped & tossed in 1 Tablespoon of flour
Method
Butter: Allow to soften on the counter or soften in microwave about 10 seconds.
Granulated sugar: Adds sweetness
Eggs: beaten
Bananas: Use very ripe and mashed with a fork or mixer
Flour: Gives structure to the bread
